In May 2025, a quiet landscape around Tottori Sand Dunes: sand ripples and the horizon stretching beyond.

Sand Ripples and the Horizon

During the May holidays in 2025, I drove my car toward western Japan.
My destination was Izumo, but along the way I stopped at several sightseeing spots.
Tottori Sand Dunes was one of them.

During the holidays, Tottori Sand Dunes was overflowing with tourists,
so it was easy to imagine how crowded it would be,
and the area around the dunes already looked especially packed.

Wanting somehow to avoid the crowds and still find a way to park the car and walk around Tottori Sand Dunes,
I searched for information on my smartphone.
I managed to find a parking lot that was not so crowded, a little distance away from the dunes.
It seemed like a far better option than having to go through the chaotic parking-lot traffic of a tourist spot.

From that parking lot, I had to walk some distance to reach the dunes,
but in return I was able to look out over the quiet landscape surrounding them.
